Weakening Mexican Drug Cartels by Legalizing Marijuana?

Weakening Mexican Drug Cartels by Legalizing Marijuana?
By Lance Winslow

The number of people who’ve died in the drug wars just over our borders in Mexico in 2008 and already in 2009 has been astronomical. Many say that since these drug gang networks and cartels sell their illegal drugs to US Consumers, why not legalize marijuana and let local growers make money, then tax it and regulate it?

One major supporter of legalizing marijuana has been on TV lately stating: “With Marijuana legalized, the drug cartel will still be around of course, but a lot weaker.”

But does this even make sense? And is it really wise to open our societies up to a pot smoking country? I mean what’s next? Evo Morales would work to get coca leaves smashed into white powder legalized too. First, as tea leaves at Starbucks and then, as a powder product – because once you start legalizing drugs where do you stop?

And will it really weaken the drug cartels in Mexico? After all, the cartels will sell whatever drugs they can get the most money for and make the most profit on. It is still at the end of the day completely supply and demand based.

If there is competition for marijuana, because local growers in the US grow it, and if the price after taxes and regulatory pass-thru costs to the consumer; it may be less than the drug gangs are willing to risk, but it may not be either. If it is much less, then they will stop selling it and sell something else.

If you regulate it you still need the ATF to prevent the smuggling of non-sanctioned illegal product. Meaning you still have a War on (non-regulated) Drugs. Fighting against the smuggled drugs still costs money, sure the supply trying to sneak in will be less and the drug busts smaller, but they’ll still try to smuggle it and grow it illegally.

No one is going to stop growing such a simple plant, nor can we really enforce regulations anyway. Who is going to do it; The FDA along with the ATF? Give weapons to the FDA to fight gang marijuana growers; that could get interesting. In the end the concept of legalizing marijuana in the US to prevent the drug wars in Mexico is utterly ridiculous. Think on this.
